What happened to flight 2501?

On the evening of June 23rd 1950, 55 passengers and three crew members boarded a Northwest Airlines flight in New York City. Flight 2501 was bound for a stop in Minneapolis before continuing to Seattle.

Somewhere over Allegan County, the flight ran into problems. Over the radio, the pilot requested to drop to 2,500 feet because of an impending storm over Lake Michigan. He was denied and the plane went down. Debris washed up on the shores of Allegan County for weeks after.
