Dowsing has come a long way from forked sticks

There was a time when the old guy on the farm up the road would cut a forked stick from a tree, clasp one hand on each side of the "y-rod," and walk his land looking for water.

When the stick suddenly dropped, the stem of the y pointing to the ground, he would dig a well. It was said that if he was a good dowser, he would find water on the spot.

On the Web site for the American Society of Dowsers, however, it appears the practice is no longer limited to looking for water on the farm.
