British explorer Sir John Franklin and his crew had set off to find the Northwest Passage to the Orient and mysteriously vanished. After six years of searching, John Rae, a Scottish doctor working for the Hudson’s Bay Company, found the remains of the crew.
But his findings — particularly the revelation that the crew had resorted to cannibalism — were so shocking that Rae’s version was torn down and discredited. With the help of Charles Dickens, the native population became the cannibals in the accepted history.
