Author interweaves story of Spiro Mounds' rise, fall

Even more drama and intrigue unfolded during the 20th century, when the mounds, long unoccupied, were plundered as a treasure trove of artifacts. The looters, hoping to gain a few dollars at the height of the Depression, sold priceless items at what La Vere termed bargain basement prices, including on the streets of Kansas City.
