'Crossing the Continent 1527-1540' by Robert Goodwin

Esteban Dorantes lived the most remarkable life of anyone you've never heard of, unless you're a scholar of the Spanish settlement of the New World.

In documents of that time, he is identified, at various times, as a slave, an ambassador, a spy, a scout, an explorer and even a kind of shaman. He was all of these things and more.
