Part of the trouble is that we know a lot about him, but not enough. Among the mass of Elizabethan trivia relating to the man who was variously Shakspere, Shaxpear and Shakeshafte, we still lack an unambiguous portrait, a definitive inventory of his writing or a cast-iron clue to his authorship.
