The 1897 Waterloo airship hoax

Frank Warren brings us a newspaper clipping from Waterloo Daily Courier from June 2, 1954 looking at the crash-landing of a phantom airship in the fair city of Waterloo, Iowa. It has the lot: an intact craft, a "goateed dandy" of an inventor, his partner who plunged to his death helping to save the vehicle and all wrapped in an impressive hoax, made doubly impressive by one of the few (the only?) photographs from this whole flap.
