Swordplay on a Salt Lake City square in 1886

At least 1,500 men gathered around the 20-by-20-foot temporary stage built at the hot springs north of Salt Lake City on June 1, 1886. One man entered the square wearing a face mask and armor over ordinary street clothes. The other was even more conspicuous, his protective gear worn over white tights and blue trunks. Both men carried fencing foils.

Interesting.
