William Weston, an English merchant, ‘first to land in North America'

Only seven years after Christopher Columbus arrived in the Caribbean, the first English-led expedition landed in North America.

That is the tantalising possiblity opened up by the publication today of evidence that Henry VII sanctioned a Bristol merchant, William Weston, to set off in search of the “new found land” in 1499.
