Inbreeding among polygamists along the Arizona-Utah border is producing a caste of severely retarded and deformed children.

Lowlight: The ultimate goal of the breeding program, Wyler says, is to create the perfect race.

It's not working. Meet Warren Jeffs, monumental douchebag.

John Karr DNA not a match in JonBenet Ramsey murder
Two sources have confirmed that the DNA sample taken from John Mark Karr is not a match with the foreign DNA found on JonBenet Ramsey's body when she was murdered in 1996.

Boulder Police still holding him on suspicion in the murder of Humpty Dumpty and a rumored appearance on the grassy knoll.

This article reports that no charges will be filed against him in Colorado. They'll probably send him to California for the child pornography charges he skated on in 2001.

The question still remains - what "details" did he have that convinced the Boulder DA to fly him back from Thailand and where, if anywhere, did he get them?

A meeting of civilisations: The mystery of China's celtic mummies
The discovery of European corpses thousands of miles away suggests a hitherto unknown connection between East and West in the Bronze Age.

Great story:

At their peak, around 300BC, the influence of the Celts stretched from Ireland in the west to the south of Spain and across to Italy's Po Valley, and probably extended to parts of Poland and Ukraine and the central plain of Turkey in the east. These mummies seem to suggest, however, that the Celts penetrated well into central Asia, nearly making it as far as Tibet.

A Higher Power
James Baker puts Bush's Iraq policy into rehab. By Robert Dreyfuss.

"Baker is primarily motivated by his desire to avoid a war at home--that things will fall apart not on the battlefield but at home. So he wants a ceasefire in American politics," a member of one of the commission's working groups told me. Specifically, he said, if the Democrats win back one or both houses of Congress in November, they would unleash a series of investigative hearings on Iraq, the war on terrorism, and civil liberties that could fatally weaken the administration and remove the last props of political support for the war, setting the stage for a potential Republican electoral disaster in 2008. "I guess there are people in the [Republican] party, on the Hill and in the White House, who see a political train wreck coming, and they've called in Baker to try to reroute the train."

Sex Crime Charges
Four area residents under investigation for alleged sex crimes surrender to authorities.

51 year old Reverend Raymond Lambert, his wife 49 year old Patty Lambert along with two deacons in their church, 51 year old Tom Epling and 53 year old Paul Epling turned themselves over to McDonald County Sheriff`s deputies today.

More details can be found here, including this:

In a telephone interview Tuesday night, Le Sueur said several former church members had come forward in the past six months, claiming they had been molested for several years. The deputy said incest was involved, adding he understood that this was the third generation of church officials who participated in child sexual abuse.

Usefuls Idiots
There's a lot of interest in Connecticut politics these days. Democratic nominee Ned Lamont is playing the usurper to Senator and former presidential candidate Joe Lieberman, who is now running as an independent. Meanwhile, the Republicans have nominated Alan Schlesinger, a former mayor of the City of Derby and a six-term State Representative. Despite the nomination of his party, Schlesinger has had little support from Republican power brokers. He seems to be merely a placeholder. President Bush has refused to endorse his candidacy as have other GOP bigwigs. Schlesinger has gambled extensively in the past and lost many thousands of dollars. On the surface this might make him a liability, but that doesn't seem to have hurt William Bennett's standing among the party faithful. Schlesinger's web site is amateurish and the Latest News links on the front page haven't been updated since April. What kind of candidate is he?

This may be a good time to look at the last Connecticut Republican Party nominee for Joe Lieberman's senate seat, Philip Giordano.

Phil Giordano was an up and coming GOP hotshot. Young, handsome, and an ex-Marine, Giordano seemed to have the entire package. He'd served as a state representative and was serving his third term as mayor of Waterbury. On paper, Phil probably looked like a good candidate. Unfortunately, Waterbury had a corruption problem and the FBI was investigating. In the course of their investigation, the Feds recorded some of Giordano's phone calls. What they heard on those recordings chilled the blood.

It seemed the married Giordano had a girlfriend on the side. As political liabilities go, that one's probable not fatal. Look at Bill Clinton. But Giordano's girlfriend was a prostitute with a young daughter and niece - age 8 and 11 - and soon investigators overheard the depth of Giordano's depravity.

"I want one of the little girls."

Giordano juggled his secret life smoothly, glibly moving between pervert and politician. Here's Giordano making arrangements with his girlfriend (called "Doe" here) to rape the children:

Giordano: "Hang on, I gotta go. Hang on, I gotta go, I gotta go."
Doe: "Okay."
(Second Call)
Giordano: "Hello."
Lauren: "Hi. Mayor Giordano?"
Giordano: "Yes."
Lauren: "Hi, my name is Lauren. I'm Bill Hanson's assistant at the Department of Education. How are you?"

Today, Phil Giordano sits in prison serving a 37 year sentence for violating the civil rights of his prostitute girlfriend's young charges - girls he sexually abused, in some cases, in his office while mayor.

He recently claimed he was owed money for unused vacation and sick days.

But Phil Giordano's "sick days" are over.

I'm not implying that Schlesinger has the disease that infected Giordano, but it does seem odd that Connecticut Republicans have shown very little interest in fielding a strong candidate to take away Lieberman's senate seat. I wonder why?

Vault believers want new dig
Advocates of our version of "The DaVinci Code" were back in town Friday, calling for another excavation to locate the "secret vault" of Sir Francis Bacon, which they still allege is buried beneath the churchyard of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church.

Totally sweet.

In the theory of the Bacon enthusiasts, it is the original King James translation of the Bible, original versions of William Shakespeare's plays (which they believe Bacon and a circle of associates actually wrote) and "Christian Hermetic-Cabalistic mystery teachings." They alleged these treasures were moved from England to Jamestown to Williamsburg.

The Baconists believe that Bacon was the illegitimate son of Queen Elizabeth I of England and thus the rightful heir to the English throne. They also believe he faked his death in 1626 and actually died in 1684, at the age of 123.

Holy crap

Questions about suspect's confession loom
The doubts have led some to wonder whether the 41-year-old Karr is the answer to the long-unsolved slaying of the child beauty queen or a disturbed wannabe trying to insert himself into a high-profile case.

See also: Disturbing tale of JonBenet suspect. Lots of new info here.

In 1984, when Karr was 19, he married a local girl, Quientana Shotts, who was 13 at the time, county court records show. Shotts filed for an annulment the following year, complaining that she was "fearful for her life and safety." In a response filed with the court, Karr contested Shotts' age, saying she was in fact 14.

In 1989, Karr remarried, this time to Lara Knutson. She was 16 at the time. Their twin daughters died the day they were born on Sept. 1, 1989. The girls, Angel and Innocence Karr, are buried in the cemetery of a rural church in a family plot.

A little Southern Gothic, no?

JonBenet suspect was 'threat,' ex-wife said
Whether he's a murderer or not has yet to be proven but he's definitely a creep.

The two had married in 1989, when Lara was 16 years old and John Karr was 24. Before their wedding, he set out to get her pregnant because in Georgia he wouldn't need parental consent to marry a pregnant minor, Lara Karr said in her 2001 divorce filing.

Judge Bars Warrantless Anti-Terrorism Surveillance
John Mark Karr may or not be a killer but Bush is still a douchebag.

A federal judge ordered the U.S. government to stop warrantless wiretapping of international telephone calls between suspected terrorists and their U.S.-based affiliates, ruling that the eavesdropping violates the Constitution and federal law.

Damn activists judges and their Constitution.

Details Of John Mark Karr's Arrest
Some new info.

Karr chloroformed JonBenet, he says

Is the Ramsey case "going sideways"?
Is John Mark Karr a "Confessing Sam"? Did his long-term obsession with he case lead to the delusion that he himself committed the crime? Or, as some have suggested, did he confess just to get out of a possible stint in a Thai prison? (Though, contrary to earlier media reports, Karr does not seem to have been under arrest in Thailand or charged with any crime there. His visa was revoked after Boulder authorities levelled the accusations against him.)

Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy has warned against jumping to conclusions and Karr has yet to be charged with any crime in the U.S.

Lara Karr, Karr's ex-wife has stated that "she was with her former husband in Alabama at the time of JonBenet's killing, and that she does not believe he was involved in the homicide."

Karr's brother has also said that Karr might have been in Georgia with them at the time of the attack.

Now, acording to news reports, Karr has climed that he drugged JonBenet, even though no drugs were found in her system by the Medical Examiner.

Is Karr falsely confessing to the crime for reasons known only to him? He has obviously had a long standing fixation with the case and JonBenet. His wife mentions his fascination with another high-profile murder case, that of Polly Klaas. Is he sick? Does he have other motives?

And be sure to check out this sketch of the suspect compiled by psychic, Dorothy Allison. She definitely got the high forehead right. And the creepy eyes.

Police: Suspect denies link to Ramsey

Ramsey update
ABC Channel 7 in San Francisco is reporting that Ramsey murder suspect John Mark Karr has ties to the Petaluma area and taught as a substitute there and in Napa.

In April of 2001, Karr was arrested at a school in Napa on five counts of possessing child pornography. He did serve some time in jail, but was released on his own recognizance in October and later failed to show up in court. He is wanted in Sonoma County and a warrant is still out for his arrest for failure to appear on those charges.

Karr's ex-wife "does not believe that her husband did it. She says that during Christmas season of 1996 when JonBenet Ramsey was strangled and beaten to death in Colorado, they were living in Alabama at the time and she was with him the entire Christmas season."

Another important note: "His ex-wife also says her husband did a lot of research on the JonBenet Ramsey case and also on Petaluma's own Polly Klaas."

Fox news is now showing a picture of this man, who seems to fit the few facts we know about John Karr.

Sploid: Goodbye Forever
The future of Sploid is uncertain at best. I, for one, will miss them. Ken Layne was a nice guy and even linked to me and sent a kind email when he copped one of my killer headlines. Best of luck, Ken, out there on the Internets. And keep in touch.

And speaking of big animals in Kansas...
This weekend I saw the biggest bird I have ever seen. I'm used to seeing hawks, and big ones at that, but this thing was like two hawks put together. No joke - I estimated the wing span at about seven feet. I think it was a Turkey Vulture, though seven feet is a large wing span for that bird. I honestly don't know what it was.

This morning I told a co-worker about it and she outdid me - she saw a mountain lion this weekend. In Kansas. And that's pretty rare. Amazingly, she's seen two of them. She saw another one fifteen years ago.

Snakes on Plains
Loren Coleman's post about giant snakes over at Cryptomundo got me thinking about giant snakes in my home state of Kansas.

The Luray Snake made quite an impression on the people of Luray - strong enough that the fearsome beast still makes the occassional appearance.

Another giant snake was spotted in Lebo in 1891 and had a length of 25 feet.

Also, a 16 foot bull snake was reportedly killed in Doniphan county about 1861 (scroll down.)
